MWL General
The Midweek League was started in 1994 as a competition to involve local businesses and has been run continuously since then. It’s essentially a 20 over competition but is run as 15 eight-ball overs to shorten the overall length of the matches and thus complete them in good light – at least, that’s the plan!
The matches begin with a ‘Round Robin’ format, the top four teams then playing in semi-finals to decide the finalists.
The competition is named after whomever is its current sponsor so from 1994-1999 it was ‘The Ward Cup’ being sponsored by Ward solicitors. From 2001-2003 it became ‘The Merchant Investors Midweek League’ and from 2005-2010 Ocean Home were sponsors and thus it was ‘The Ocean Home Midweek League’. In years without sponsorship it’s ‘The Midweek League’.
