A Red Letter Day

Saturday 25th June 2011 will go down in the history books of Bradley Stoke Cricket Club as the first time in the club’s history that all four league teams recorded a victory. BSCC introduced a fourth league team last season however it wasn’t until this season that the 4th XI recorded their first win in the league against United Banks. What made this milestone one to savor was the manner of the victories.

The 1st XI had a tricky matchup against Y.M.C.A and batting first put on a total of 169 runs with Daniel Peachy top scoring with 80. However a stellar performance with the ball from Barry Radford (15ovrs, 3mdns, 7-40) ripped through the Y.M.C.A batting lineup to record a 51 run victory. Things were a lot closer in the 2nd XI’s game against Y.M.C.A where the 2nd XI won the toss and elected to bowl. Y.M.C.A set a target of 186 (Adrian Cooper 15ovrs, 3mdns, 3-57) to win and that total looked like being enough when BSCC were 152-9 (Gareth Price top scorer with 47). However a final wicket stand and a dramatic final ball saw BSCC seal a victory by just one wicket!

The 3rd XI had a tricky tie against Chipping Sodbury “C” on what was a damp and rather green wicket. BSCC won the toss and elected to bowl and thanks to some acrobatic catches bowled Chipping Sodbury “C” out for 104 (S. Hussein 7ovrs, 2mdns, 3-14). The going was tough however a stand of 67 between Nick English (32) and Shahbaz Hussein (25) brought the 3rds into contention and despite the loss of some quick wickets managed to seal a 3 wicket victory. In the match between the 4XI and Timsbury CC it was a game of two bowlers with BSCC winning the toss and electing to bowl. Dennis Talbot was the pick of the bowlers (12ovrs, 3mdns, 6-32) as BSCC bowled Timsbury out for 108. However captain for the opposition, John Ford, tried his hardest to salvage a victory as he posted equally impressive bowling figures of 12ovrs, 3mdns, 6-37. However fellow captain Tim Onslow (30 not out) added 25 for the last wicket with Andy Smith (12 not out) to win the game for Bradley Stoke.

Congratulations to all captains and teams for their efforts on Saturday in what was truly a remarkable weekend of cricket.
